12 Kickass Body Positive Instagram accounts you should follow if you’re not already

bikini-body

It’s hard to love yourself amidst the photoshop perfected pictures strewn all around the world.

Truth Bomb though: No one looks pretty all the time IRL, nor is anyone perpetually ugly. Selfies can be a form of proud expression, but the wait for that 11th like on Insta can be pretty harrowing for, you know, us humans.

On the other end of the spectrum, for some, maintaining these near impossible standards can become a job, an addiction. As recently seen in the case of Instagram celebrity Enessa O’Neal, it can be like “drowning” in an illusion.

O’Neal deleted her Instagram account, which was a repository of everything Cosmo tells you is gorgeous, and started a new website called Let’s Be Game Changers.

But here’s the thing: Your Instagram is only as real as you let it be. Lots of really lovely women have already accepted this fact, embraced it even.

They’re like

So, stop browsing Kylie lip injection pictures and Kendal’s Balmain promos for five minutes. Let’s check out these women who run Body Positive Insta accounts that are resplendent for their honesty about who they are.

1. Traprapunzel

We love how this girl deals with haters.

2. Sonshu

This blogger from Bangalore has a quirky, fun Insta presence, and gives the nerd lover in us all kinds of goosebumps. Because: who doesn’t love a good Hogwarts look? No one, that’s who! In her own words that we love:

“Sonaksha Iyengar is fat, she’s going to talk about it every now and then – acceptance and self love and all. Who said fat people can’t wear crop tops or stripes? “

3. StyleHasNoSize by Edith Dohmen

Edith Dohmen is a fashion stylist from the Netherlands on a mission.

On her blog, she lets you know right away that she’s a size 44-46 EU (14-16 US, 16-18 UK). Then she reminds you that “every woman has the right to look good and dare to be noticed and that style and beauty have NOTHING to do with a size!”

We implore you to never forget those words.

4. effyourbeautystandards

Created by one of the first plus sized supermodels Tess Munster  and “run by 8 body posi ladies & 1 fella,” this account is a constant source of lulz. Their LA-based website Tess Holliday also sells some fun memorabilia as tee-shirts, totes and stickers.

12. rupikaur_

Rupi Kaur is an Indian poetess whose book Milk n Honey is receiving rave reviews. She’s also an urban legend for taking on Instagram’s ridiculous body image rules with her mensuration picture, which showed her lying down with a small red strain on her bum that was removed by the social media platform. They later apologised as they should’ve (like, who here isn’t ‘the world’s biggest stainer’ when the crimson wave comes a-knocking?)  Her project on Body Hair is a favourite among us Pyjamas (one Punjabi, the other Maharasthran — can’t you imagine why?)

hairful model: anonymous shot by: rupi kaur ⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀ if you’re interested in being a model for the project and you are from Ontario or London, uk please email info@rupikaur.com. all colours genders body types wanted. ⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀ ‘hairful’ is a new photo project i’ve taken up to document the growth and nature of hair on human bodies through photography. with a special focus on brown bodies. as these bodies deal with a unique set of battles and face intersectional struggles that have been kept virtually invisible and non existent within our contemporary medias. from bushy brows to knuckle hair to hair on the rest of the body and face. i look forward to presenting an honest truth of the struggles one goes through to deal with western societal pressures + eurocentric beauty standards of staying naked and ‘neat’. how they hurt us. how they come to define us. and how we can move towards a much more positive and accepting view of the nature of our bodies. although i won’t be releasing this project online, i look forward to sharing bits and pieces of it here with you from time to time. stay beautiful and shining sweetloves😌🌞 ⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀ A photo posted by rupi kaur (@rupikaur_) on
