#AntzDoodles for Pyjama People #6: Dip, dip, deep

Dip, dip, deep

By Antima Nahar

Mornings are the worst with RA – stiff fingers, and aching wrists, feet, joints. But, with every kind of pain comes a bizarre home remedy.

In this case, the treatment requires me to dip my hands and feet at the same time in a bucket of water.

Yes, you can roll your eyes again for me too – funny sight, right? But it only gets more impressive – I have dip for five minutes in hot water and after that: two minutes in cold water! For 21 minutes every day. A total of 2 hours 27 minutes a week of nothingness. Or so it could have been.

The hot, cold dance routine gainfully employed my hands and feet, but the rest of me wondered what to do with this time. I could have blinked 300 times, painted with my mouth or even contemplated about the polymer structure of my plastic bucket … but I decided to use my head instead.

The Nichiren Buddhism mantra, Nam Myoho Renge Kyo, became the soundtrack to my bucket ritual. No matter how busy the day was, in these 21 minutes, I chanted. As the water worked on the joints, the hymn worked on my soul. And just like that, the 21 minutes of nothingness turned into 21 minutes of somethings.
