About a girl: sometimes, we do have a lot of things in common

comic9 feature

I’m an artist. About a month ago I started making single page comics. These illustrations began as a way to create art that was funny and relatable and told my story or stories I’ve witnessed in my life. Starting today, I’ll be sharing these comics with you on Pyjama People!

About a Girl

If I’m totally honest, on some level I identify myself as an urban girl; a “basic bitch”, if you will. My problems are not earth shattering, but they are mine. My problems — like those of so many of us, I’m sure — are a mix of superficial, general existential angst and self-indulgence. This series was made to convey the inane issues that occupy my mental space and find the infinite jest inherent in urban lives.

Lipstick Love

It’s a superficial problem, I know, I know. But, it eats at me more than I eat the lipstick I’ve applied in five minutes (which is all of it, right?). I feel strongly against adhering to a stereotype of ‘women who wear makeup’ – I’m sure you know them, ‘those kind of girls’.

Lipstick, especially so, comes with all kinds of connotations. Whether you wear it or don’t; how often you wear it; the shade you pick – There’s nothing really experimental about lipstick. It’s an age-old idea that all types of women (and sometimes men) have been implementing one way or another across the globe since forever. Then why is it that on the day I wear some, I feel adventurous. I feel like the Bowie of the party?

We are all Obsessed with Ourselves

My friends and I often bitch about the ‘new generation’. It’s funny because I feel like every generation thinks this about the next. But, here is the world, up and running.

Let’s just accept that every generation seems like they’re the OGs and the new ones are trying too hard. We all indulge in some form of narcissism because we enjoy it.

Beauty Regime

My best friend and I spend ages making organic beauty products. Face-packs, leave-in hair things, rinses, toners — you name it, we make it. We do healthy things for all of one day with these concoctions on our faces, consequently becoming the subject of many laughs from my parents. After the ritual, we tell each other we’re glowing. This keeps us feeling good about life for a couple of days.

Travel – Reality vs Expectations

TV and Social Media put pressure on my generation to look at travel as a spiritual journey. They romanticise it to a point where a great vacation becomes Mission Impossible. >

I set off on all my holidays with these sepia-toned images in mind. I’m high-fiving a bunch of multi-cultural ambiguous-sexed cool-looking people in a picturesque setting; I’m finding my zen on a deserted beach. In reality, traveling on a 20s budget is often uncomfortable situations, awkward conversations, people in om-printed dhoti-pants, and no photographs of me at all.

The only thing that usually stays true is the picturesque setting and, I admit, there’s nothing like nature’s art to make every disappointment worthwhile.
