Angelina Jolie turns 46 today. The actor isn’t really known for her action movies, but maybe she should be. She was part of a number of notable films in the genre.
While not as active as an actor as before, Angeline Jolie is still one of the best action heroines in 21st century Hollywood.
Here are five action movies starring Jolie that you should see today. Keep in mind that while these movies may not be a good watch on their own, Jolie herself is sublime.
Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001): Amazon Prime Video
Based on the popular action-adventure video games Tomb Raider, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider was a challenging role for 20-year-old Jolie, who proved she could more than handle it. While the film itself was not groundbreaking, Jolie’s performance was regarded as such, almost universally. Perhaps in the hands of better directors and writers, the film would have spawned a successful franchise.
Wanted (2008): Netflix
In Timur Bekmambetov’s action thriller, Jolie played opposite James McAvoy. In the film, Jolie is the mentor of McAvoy’s meek servants who discover he is the son of a legendary hit man. The film contains some fantastic action scenes and is extremely entertaining overall.
Lara Croft: Tomb Raider – The Cradle of Life (2003)
The sequel to Lara Croft: Tomb Raider received slightly better reviews, but was still a dud. Jolie’s work, however, was again praised, this time even more. This movie will make you wonder if more such movies had come her way, maybe Jolie wasn’t one of the biggest action stars of this century.
Also in Salt, Jolie’s excellent performance was failed by mediocre writing. Overall, the film is still a great watch to see the actor in action.
Those Who Wish Me Dead (2021)
Jolie showed that even in her mid-forties, she literally packs a punch through the movie They Who Wish Me Dead. The film had Jolie as Hannah, a smoke jumper (firefighters working to stop wildfires) who encounters Connor (Finn Little), a child on the run from two killers who want him dead. Jolie, who had played in few live-action films in recent years, felt completely at home in this dramatic, demanding role.
