Bollywood actors Parineeti Chopra and Arjun Kapoor are receiving critical acclaim for their performance in Dibakar Banerjee’s latest film Sandeep Aur Pinky Faraar. Though the film hit theaters on March 19, it didn’t get a life until it was recently released on Amazon Prime Video. Speaking to indianexpress.com, Arjun and Parineeti looked back at making the film and how Dibakar got the best out of them.
As spectators, we’ve seen many other films by these actors and to give credit where it belongs, it’s certainly one of the best performances we’ve seen from the two stars. Kapoor echoed the statement, sharing: “I’m still the same actor making those other movies, but each movie has a different director.” Parineeti added that the other directors she works with have very little to say when it comes to actually giving directions to an actor. “They’ll say thoda energy up kar do (increase the energy), that’s the maximum they’ll give you,” she said. Arjun explained it best when he said, “It felt like children were making a play. It never felt like it was going to happen that way. It was fun, it paid off.”
Arjun elaborated on the behind-the-scenes process of bringing Pinky to the screen. Pinky doesn’t use his words very often, instead letting his silences do the talking. Arjun shared that Dibakar emphasized those silences even more in the editing phase. Talking about the scene where Pinky changes his mind to leave Sandy behind and leave for Nepal, Arjun said that with each take he gave me a different thought to think about. He added: ‘That’s the nice thing about Dibakar, sir, he always doesn’t talk about the shot, he’ll tell you something about Pinky that needs to be told, something about Sandeep, so that something spins in your head. He never informed me directly about what the next scene is or the scene before it.”
Arjun shared that they spent three months preparing this character and that “the reward is in the silences”. “Those everyday conversations we’ve had about how many girlfriends I’ve had, my childhood, why I have issues with emotions, he’s tapped into certain things. Looking back now, it’s that process that brought these close-ups to life. He told us so much about the character without telling us anything about the scene,” Arjun added.
Parineeti spoke of her experience of filming with Dibakar Banerjee and described him as a ‘chameleon’. “He will direct different actors based on the people they are. We would argue with me for hours. I’ve never fought so much with a director,” she said.
Speaking of her academic background, Parineeti claimed that the questioning route works best for her as a performer. “I have a very academic background so asking lots of questions works best for me because once I have clarity I can give a shot faster. I’ve also worked with other directors and that process doesn’t work with them. They can’t handle it. Long story short, Mr. Dibakar’s ability to mold himself for each actor has brought out the best in each actor,” Parineeti said.
Apart from Parineeti and Arjun, Sandeep Aur Pinky Faraar has some commendable performances from Neena Gupta, Raghubir Yadav and Jaideep Ahlawat.
