Nearly two weeks after the release of Cruella, led by Emma Stone, Disney Studios has already begun work on a sequel, with director Craig Gillespie and screenwriter Tony McNamara both expected to return.
According to Variety, it is still unclear whether the Oscar-winning actor would reprise the lead role in the proposed sequel.
Cruella, starring Stone as fan-favorite “One Hundred and One Dalmatians” villain Cruella de Vil, debuted in US theaters in May and was released simultaneously on streaming platform Disney Plus.
It received positive reviews and has hit $32.4 million domestically and $48.5 million worldwide to date.
“We are delighted with the success of ‘Cruella’s’ at the box office, coupled with the strong Disney Plus Premier Access performance to date… We look forward to a long-term view as audiences continue to enjoy this fantastic film” , a Disney spokesperson said in a statement.
