Like its southern neighbor, Canada’s real estate market is expected to see continued growth in 2021, particularly in the luxury sector. In Toronto, an emerging global hub, home sales of $5 million or more are up more than 8% year-on-year, while sales of $2 million or more are up about 10%. In March, the median home price was nearly $1.1 million, according to the Toronto Regional Real Estate Board.
In this week’s look at the world’s most beautiful homes, I compared properties in Toronto to similarly priced properties near Vero Beach, Florida and New York City. From a contemporary home in the heart of the West Village to a custom home on exclusive Old Colony Road, here’s a closer look at what about $6.2 million buys in Hutchinson Island, Manhattan and Toronto.
West Village, Manhattan, New York City | $6.5 million
This Greenwich Lane condominium in the heart of the West Village has been renovated from top to bottom and features a tasteful mix of high ceilings, wide plank floors and artsy fixtures. The unit has two bedrooms and two bathrooms in over 1,500 square feet of living space.
Characteristics: Walls of windows converge in the library/second bedroom to perfectly frame panoramic views of the nearby river and cityscape. The floor-to-ceiling glass continues in the living room and primary suite, the latter of which has been extensively updated with a marble clad bathroom and beautiful appliances.
Other benefits: Private storage and a lease for the seller’s garage — two hard-to-find items in the urban metropolis — can be included in the sale for an additional cost.

York Mills, Toronto, Ontario | $6.22 million (CAD 7.5 million)
Designed and built by custom homebuilder Joe Brennan of Brennan Custom Homes, this palatial residence is located in York Hills, a highly desirable neighborhood in Toronto’s North York district. Tailored for entertainment and family living, the 11,000-square-foot home has a lower level of entertainment, complete with a glass wine cellar, billiard room, recreation room, wet bar, and nanny suite.
Characteristics: At the heart of the house is a sunken living room which is entered through a pair of patio doors. The common area in the center is fitted with beautiful herringbone-patterned wooden floors and topped by a Swarovski chandelier. Windows framing front gardens and a wood-burning fireplace with a marble surround and carved mantel complete the timeless setting.
Other benefits: There is something for everyone at the Old Colony Road estate. Amenities include a newly added sports court, indoor pool and spa. A gym and cedar-lined sauna are some other noteworthy touches.
