Jury will re-examine ONV Kurup literary award for Vairamuthu after public outcry

The ONV Cultural Academy is ‘rethinking’ its decision to reward songwriter Vairamuthu after a massive outcry on social media. “At the request of the award committee, the ONV Cultuuracademie has decided to reconsider the ONV Literature Prize,” the academy said in a press release.

The academy came under fire from high profile members of the Malayalam film industry for targeting Vairamuthu as the recipient of the fifth ONV Kurup Literary Prize. Vairamuthu has been accused of predatory behavior by several women during the height of the #MeToo movement in India a few years ago.

Actor Parvathy led the criticism of the jury chaired by renowned filmmaker Adoor Gopalakrishnan for failing to consider the allegations against Vairamuthu before selecting him for the award. The jury was charged with undermining the pain of those who suffered from Vairamuthu’s alleged predatory behavior.

“If you come to me with the debate between art and artist, let me tell you that for me the only thing I would like to look at is the humanity of the person who makes the art. I can live without the ‘art’ of those who erode lives with impunity, ”Parvathy had dismissed the jury in a post on her Instagram page.

ONV Sir’s name resonates with deep sensitivity, dignity and respect for every Malayalee. Therefore very concerned to know that ONV Academy has chosen an alleged perpetrator (summoned by 17 women) for the #ONVAward. Are these the values they celebrate? https://t.co/Y87dOIcGfj
