The trailer for Vidya Balan-starrer Amazon Prime movie Sherni is out. The actor plays the role of an Indian Forest Service (IFS) officer in the film who appears to be centered around the delicate and oft-discussed balance between humans and wildlife.
In the video, we see Vidya’s character battling sexist stereotypes to overcome hurdles in both professional and personal life. The actor appears to be on top form as she gears up to track down “a troubled tigress” who has caused a stir in the community, both literally and figuratively. While people in areas around the forest worry about safety, officers exchange words about the threat level posed by an unhinged tigress.
The film’s official two-line synopsis reads: “A jaded forest officer (Vidya Balan) leads a team of trackers and local residents who set out to capture a troubled tigress as they battle intense obstacles and pressures, both natural and man caused. “
This seems like another meaty role for Vidya to milk, who is known for portraying complex, layered women on screen. Joining her on this journey are other talented artists such as Neeraj Kabi, Vijay Raaz, Sharat Saxena and Ila Arun among others.
In a recent statement about Sherni, Vidya had said, “Since I first heard Sherni’s story, I found the world fascinating and so far removed from mine. Also the character I play, Vidya is a woman of few words but many dimensions. The film deals with a sensitive subject that touches on respect, mutual understanding and coexistence, not only between humans and animals, but also between humans. Bringing this unique character and story to the global audience through Amazon Prime Video gives me immense pleasure and I hope to engage them in unexpected ways.”
Sherni is directed by Amit Masurkar, who also helmed the critically acclaimed Newton. Therefore, it wouldn’t be wrong to say that we probably have a valuable drama on our hands.
Amit had also shared his experience working on the film, saying: “Sherni is an intricately layered story that explores the complex issues of human-animal conflict. Vidya Balan plays a middle-class forest ranger who works with her team despite obstacles and pressures and local allies to keep the balance in the environment. It is an incredible experience for me to work with her, the great cast of the ensemble and the very talented crew.”
Funded by Bhushan Kumar’s T-Series, Sherni will be released on Amazon Prime Video on June 18.
