Actor Kate Winslet’s HBO series Mare of Easttown dominates pop culture discourse around the world. The seven-part series has received rave reviews from critics and fans alike. However, it has left some of the audience disappointed as they are not happy with the way Guy Pearce’s character was presented in the series.
The show’s fans have pointed out that Guy Pearce’s character can do very little to advance the narration. Australian comedian Steen Raskopoulos provides a hilarious approach to Guy’s role in the series, which otherwise appears to be a stunning investigative drama.
“Guy Pearce’s agent introducing him to his character in Mare Of Easttown,” Steen wrote, tweeting the funny sketch. And as a bonus, he also takes a swipe at Kevin Spacey’s upcoming pedophilia drama, directed by Franco Nero.
The Mare of Easttown showrunners understand the complaints about not putting an Emmy-award winning actor of Guy’s caliber at the heart of the series’ conflict. But the showrunners have their reasons too.

Guy was not the original choice to play Richard Ryan, a novelist and Kate Winslet’s love interest. It was British actor Ben Miles who was first tapped to play the part. In a major recast, he was dropped from the cast along with series director Gavin O’Connor. And then Craig Zobel was given the responsibility of directing the series.
The showrunners have revealed that Guy accepted to be part of the series as a favor to his old friend Kate. “I’ve read a lot of theories about Guy online, but he was always written as a character who would just come in and be a kind of light in Mare’s life. He came into her life during this very challenging time and he helped her get through it and he was always just that,” explained show creator Brad Ingelsby while discussing Mare of Easttown on the Vanity Fair podcast.
Mare of Easttown will be streamed on Disney plus Hotstar in India.
