Why is Money Heist season 5 the finale? Makers say ‘the smartest thing to do is leave with a bang’

Money Heist 5 is fast approaching its release date. So when Netflix announced last August that the next season will also be its last, fans around the world were left with mixed feelings. While they can’t wait to find out what happens inside the Bank of Spain after Money Heist 4’s cliffhanger ending, they were also saddened to see the popular crime drama come to an end.

In an exclusive chat during the virtual set visit from Spain, La Casa De Papel or Money Heist makers were candidly told why the team took the call to give us a final with the upcoming season.

The showrunner and executive producer of Money Heist, lex Pina, claimed that the emotional chart of several characters needed to be shut down: “We made over 2000 minutes of fiction with two heists. I think we lost some of the emotional arcs of the characters and their have exhausted arcs of transformation. We’ve talked a lot and I think it’s a good time to stop. It’s a very climatic season and I think it’s always better to leave earlier than later.”

The band of robbers, conceived by the force called The Professor, is now undertaking its second heist at the Bank of Spain. They started the plan after successfully robbing Spain’s Royal Mint in the show’s first two seasons. However, the arrest and illegal detention of one of their members, Rio, forced the team to reunite with a bigger agenda.

The show, which started with eight original robbers, saw three of them killed at the end of the first robbery. These were Berlin, Moscow and Oslo. However, due to the popularity of Berlin (Pedro Alonso), the character was brought back in season 3 through flashbacks.

On the other hand, new gang members such as Stockholm, Lisbon, Palermo, Bogota, Manila and Marseille have joined the robbery. This time it’s not about money anymore. They have all declared war on the greatest new enemy: the military.

Director, executive producer and core team member, Jesús Colmenar further revealed in the virtual meeting: “We have a lot of examples in international fiction of series that we think went on too long. And I think the smartest thing you can do if a series on the pinnacle of his success, as Álex says, is to leave with a bang and make a season that is very special in many ways.”

Jesús went on to hint that they tried to connect all the wires in Money Heist 5 to draw curtains for the series. “It’s very different from all previous seasons and we put all our eggs in one basket to go out with a bang,” he concluded.

Money Heist 5 will be a 10-episode season in two parts. While part one will start streaming on Netflix on September 3, part two will be released on December 3.

The season starts where we left it in season 4, including the deaths of Nairobi and Inspector Alicia Sierra catching The Professor in his hideout.

Actors Álvaro Morte (The Professor), Úrsula Corberó (Tokyo), Itziar Ituño (Lisbon), Miguel Herrán (Rio), Jaime Lorente (Denver), Esther Acebo (Stockholm), Rodrigo de la Serna (Palermo) and Najwa Nimri (Alicia Sierra) will return among others.
